I think I have finally found my motivation to excercize. How does a walking trip of Europe sound? It's something I have always wanted to do, and have decided why not? Dad thinks it's a great idea. Rosie, how many miles should I be able to comfortably do a day? Do you have an opinion? Another thing on my list of things to do is a long train trip with a sleeper car. Dad won't be excited about this one. Does that appeal to anyone besides me?

Mmmmm . . . both trips sound wonderful.
Most people, at a fairly good clip, make about 3 mph walking. So, start working on the number of hours you can walk at a stretch. :o)
I'm so jealous! You will have such a great time. That is great motivation!
I'm sore (shin splints)after doing 2 miles a day all week - eek. Europe will kill me this Summer OH WELL!!!!
Ok, about walking...
Make sure you have COMFORTABLE shoes. I cannot stress this enough. I have very, very, painful plantar fascitis and have to have good shoes.
Never be afraid to get orthodics, especially if you have Wilson feet. Uncle Cam says I do and that means very high arches which will pronate, see also very bad plantar fascitis.
Always, stretch out before you walk and then when you get home. It will make you feel better.
I also have a pedometer I like to use. I write down how many steps and the approx mile equvallent I walk. One year I walked over 100 miles.... and yes I sang as I walked.
But have fun. I love walking, and I'm excited that we finally are getting more and mroe days we actually can go out and walk. It's beena long winter.
I forgot to mention, shin splints come from shoes that are not working for your feet. When I start feeling like I'm getting shin splits, I know it's time for a new pair of shoes.
When are you going!?!?! I would suggest bringing us and a vespa.... oh and plan out your trip... I can plan a work out to get you ready... You could do a lot in a day if you are ready... just depends if you want to see a lot or stroll. You space out your hard days and you can do many many miles... h2o, food, pack, many things play a part
You know, I used to work for the call center of Eurorail, taking calls from here in the US, and the whole time I was so jealous of everyone buying rail passes with the sleeper cars. So, to answer your question, that does appeal to me and you aren't crazy.
Our family did an Amtrak trip from MN to ID a couple years ago coach one way and sleeper cars back. It was a holiday and we bought way in advance and it was an amazing price on the sleepers, but others we rode with paid almost quadruple what we did when they bought closer to the trip.
You are considered "first class" customer in the sleepers on Amtrak and all your meals are provided. (Which is good 'cause they're known for being behind schedule which makes it difficult to plan for packing all your food if traveling long distances.)
Not sure how European train travel compares, but you certainly wouldn't get your exercise in on the train . . . :) Both sound like wonderful experiences and memories just waiting to be made!
Happy exploring!
Love,
Anna
