Bear Sighting

The last two days the weather has been picture perfect which is nice because it has been cold and wet for several days. Because the weather was cooperating it ws time to get the lawn mowed. As I was heading west my eye caught what I first thought to be a big black dog running from the top of the draw north down to the pond. Looking at it I thought, that it was sure a funny way for a dog to run. Looking closer I realized it was a black bear. I turned off the mower and called for Dad. He thought I had chopped my foot off and came running but missed it by a few seconds. That is the first time in our twenty years of being here that I have seen a bear on the property. It was a great experience for me.

Today we loaded the bikes and went to the Kootenai Wildlife Habitat. The ride is an easy one (which is good for me). It is almost eight miles but very doable. We had a great time. We saw a fox, a couple of deer and a lot of water fowl. Nice day.

The chickens are getting a new picture window in the coop, compliments of Dad. More sunlight, more eggs.

My parents had a bear come on their porch and take their dog food bowl and proceeded to eat it outside. For some reason this year all the bears are coming down and the forest rangers don't know why.

I saw a big black bear in the field of the ISU extension on Boyer earlier this summer, and had the very same experience. (Man, that's a HUGE German Shepherd! What it is doing jumping up to stand on its hind legs to see over the grass like that? Man, those are BIG ears . . . woah--that's a BEAR!)

The Anderman and I were in the car, and we totally disregarded the (light) traffic on the road to stop right as the bear was about to cross in front of us. S/he turned and eventually disappeared into the trees back across the field, but it was incredible to see. I didn't know black bears could get that big . . .
