Mother's Day

Here are some important mothers in my life. On the left is my Grandmother McKay, my mother Lucille is the bride and Little Grandma Gold on the right.

This is Little Grandma Gold at 16. She is my mother's step mother. Mom's mother died when she was two. Grandpa had six children. Louise had come from Germany after WWI and belonged to the ward that the family attended. An interesting but sad side note that mom shared about Grandma is that when she first moved to the states because Germans weren't very accepted because of the war; no one spoke to her at church for the first six months that she attended church. I loved that her testimony was stronger than the unkindness. She worked as a housemaid for one of the wealthy families in the area. The older boys encouraged Grandpa to ask her out. He was really hesitant because she was quite a bit younger than him and he did have six children. Eventually they married and they added four more children to the mix. Mom ask her once if she loved grandpa when she married him. All Grandma would say was"well he had all those little children". Mom said she just knew how desperately she was needed.

This is Aunt Sarah, grandpa's sister. She took the twins (mom and Uncle Don) when first Grandpma Gold passed away and kept them for two years. Aunt Sarah wanted so badly to keep the twins but Little Grandma Gold insited that the family be whole. That took a lot of courage on both their parts.

Here's Little Grandma with Grandpa, Cameron on the right, Joan in the middle and me on the left. This is a great lady. Going to her home there was always wonderful food, the best sugar cookies in the world and an open refrigerator for snacking. Grandma was quiet and to her great credit mom says in all the years of her growing up and adulthood she never heard Grandma say anything negative about anyone. She worked in the nursery at church for over forty years. She kept an immaculate home but you never worried about sitting on the furniture. She also cleaned the Salt Lake temple early Saturday mornings for many many years. The list could go on and on. She was an elect lady. We thank Heavenly Father for sending her to us.
