GREAT DEPRESSION ART

This is my first attempt to painting Great Depression art. It worked in that I was depressed with the results. I just can't seem to capture the feeling I want. I need advise and direction.

he looks like he is dead. And why would anyone want to buy or collect depressing art? I totally disagree w/ the man who wants you to go that route. We believe in things "virtuous, lovely etc...

Alright scum, here's the deal.
I think there's potencial with this. I can tell you stressed over this one. I live the contrast in colors (the man and the apples) and it actually makes me think you could do the happier side of the depression. Show a mad recieving an apple, as an act of kindness, or paint a man holding onto the shoulders of his wife from behind, like he's comforting her. I think tha you could nail this. I think you could nail the painting you just tried. Don't think "depressed" when you paint it, rather, think small glimmer of hope, a dream... We'll chat about it.

I know you don't paint faces, but for me when I look at the Art of the Great Depression I always am drawn to the faces and the desperation I see in them. The one that comes to mind is the mother and her children in the tent. Anyway....

The other art I always link to the Great Depression are the WPA murals in the Coit Tower in San Fransico...

Well, I am not an artist, so to me it looks good. The only thing I can't figure out, is who would be depressed sitting next to that beautiful basket of apples? Even if you can't eat them they sure are pretty to look at. Maybe you should move away from the Depression and start doing Depression still lifes...just a thought.
